The $600M firm turns entire data rooms into investment memos in its own template, in a day, with every claim traced back to its source.
V7 Disclosure: Moderne Ventures is an investor in our company and a user of our product
V7 Go is the platform Moderne Ventures runs its due diligence on. Moderne, a venture capital and growth equity firm with more than $600 million under management, has made V7 Go part of how its investment team evaluates a deal: it drops an entire data room in, and gets back an investment memo in its own template.
Work that used to take weeks now takes a day.
Moderne calls itself a generalist investor with a vertical focus. It backs transformative technology across four multitrillion-dollar industries that innovation has historically passed over: real estate, finance, insurance, and sustainability. The firm has invested in more than 50 companies, from around $2 million in revenue up to pre-IPO, and it looks at a lot of deals to do it.
Looking at that many deals means reading through a lot of data rooms. The obvious fix is to hire more analysts to get through them faster.
Wrong problem. The bottleneck was never the number of people on the team. It was the hours those people spent assembling information before anyone could begin to think about it.
A whole data room, into a memo, in their template
“When we’re going through looking at a new company, we’ll dump a whole data room into V7 Go and have it create an investment memo for us,” says Constance Freedman, Founder and Managing Partner of Moderne Ventures. “It’s in our template, and it populates all the things that we need. And when we check it, it’s actually accurate.”
It does not replace the analyst, and Freedman is quick to say so. What it changes is where the analyst’s time goes.
“What it does is it makes the process go from weeks to a day, and it allows us to really spend the time focused on analyzing whether or not we want to do a deal,” she says.
Weeks to a day. Same diligence, same team checking the work.
Every claim traces back to its source
Here is the detail that matters when a memo lands in front of an investment committee: every claim can be traced back to where it came from. V7 Go’s visual grounding cites each answer to the exact place in the source document it was drawn from.
“It will not only give you the answer, but it will share where the answers come from. I can go and click into it to verify myself how that analysis was done,” Freedman says.
She reads citations the way someone who used to bill by the hour does. Before she was an investor, Freedman spent three and a half years as a lawyer, and it shows.
“I like to know exactly where everything is coming from. I double, triple check just about everything,” she says. “It gives me that comfort that if I put this in the memo, or I say this stat that V7 Go is giving me, it’s accurate. V7 Go is much more like a working colleague than a question and answer that may not actually be true.”
The part nobody planned for
The workflow keeps turning up uses the team did not design. Freedman recently went back to a company Moderne had looked at a year earlier, this time with a year of new financials and information on top of the original memo.
“I threw in the memo we did a year ago, and I threw in the updated financials and all the new information into V7 Go, and I simply asked what changed,” she says. It tagged the differences point by point: what changed, what was different, what was good, what was bad. “It completely accelerated my whole diligence and got us to a decision much faster.”
The buy-versus-build question, from someone who funds the builders
Moderne hears a lot of founders argue that software is cheap now, that you can just ask an AI to code the tool you need. As an investor in exactly those companies, Freedman is not convinced it holds for the hard cases.
“You can have an AI agent build it for you. But do you want to go and think about all those edge cases, and all those integrations, and make sure the security is there, the regulatory aspects, yourself?” she says. “The reason most enterprises buy rather than build is that companies like V7 have created an expertise you can’t attain without putting tens of millions of dollars into producing it yourself.”
Past diligence, into the boardroom
The use has not stayed confined to due diligence. Ahead of a week with four back-to-back board meetings, Freedman put the board decks through V7 Go.
“I read every single page of the board decks. But I put all the information into V7 Go, and I got good summaries, and also insight on things I hadn’t even thought of,” she says. “It helps me prepare, and it makes me a better board member.”
“As an investor, we’re always looking to balance being as fast as we possibly can with being as thorough as we possibly can,” says Matt Burns, an investor at Moderne. “V7 allows us to do both. We use it for everything from market research to pulling comps, evaluating companies, and analyzing financials.”
Weeks to a day. Same diligence, same team checking every claim against its source. The memo is in front of the investment committee before the other firms have finished indexing the data room.
